Sylvan United Church History
Sylvan's geographical area is centred about 40 kilometres north of Victoria, on Vancouver Island, in B.C. The Pastoral Charge came into being when the two historic congregations at Shawnigan Lake and Mill Bay, both faced with an influx of new members in a rapidly developing community, made a decision to become one congregation, worshipping together in the larger of the two churches at Shawnigan Lake.
The combined congregation then began to plan for a new future together. The space problem persisted, and a search for a suitable property to locate a new and larger sanctuary was undertaken. In the meantime, an offer to purchase the Shawnigan Lake Church was concluded. The Congregation moved to temporary quarters in the Shawnigan Lake Community Centre, where we worshipped for nearly five years. After several hopeful beginnings, we secured new property near Mill Bay on the Shawnigan-Mill Bay road and built a new church to accompany an existing companion building housing our offices and Church Hall.
